You’ve practiced for this. Your mind is the last thing holding you back.
Performance psychology coaching for musicians who are technically prepared and ready to become mentally unshakeable.
The problem
-
You practice at a high level. But under pressure — in auditions, competitions, recitals — something shifts. Your body tightens. Your mind goes somewhere else. The music you know disappears.
-
The gap between your best run-through and your audition performance isn’t about preparation. It’s about what happens to your attention, your arousal, and your identity when the stakes go up.
-
Some days you’re untouchable. Other days you can’t find it at all. The difference isn’t random. It’s identifiable, trainable, and fixable.
Mental skills training. Not therapy.
THIS IS NOT
✗ Psychotherapy or clinical mental health counseling
✗ General life coaching or motivation work
✗ A quick fix or single-session program
✗ Something only for performers who are struggling
✗ Diagnosis or treatment of any mental health condition
THIS IS
✓ Structured mental performance training grounded in performance psychology
✓ A specific methodology with a clear beginning, middle, and end
✓ Built specifically for performing artists — not adapted from another field
✓ A complement to your technical training, not a replacement for it
✓ Forward-focused, skill-building, and transferable to every high-stakes context
A note on scope:
If something surfaces in our work that falls outside the scope of performance psychology, I will say so directly — and I will help connect you with the right professional. My work is performance-specific and forward-focused. It is not a substitute for clinical care.
How it works
01 — Assessment
We start where you actually are. A full performance assessment identifies your specific mental performance gaps — the exact places where your preparation stops translating under pressure.
03 — Skill Building
Session by session, we work through the four pillars: Performance Identity, Focus Direction, Capacity, and IZOF (your individual optimal performance zone). Every session ends with a concrete, immediately usable tool.
02 — Identity & Values Work
Before building skills, we build the foundation. Who are you as a performer? Why do you do this? The answers shape everything that follows.
04 — Performance Integration
Skills built in the session transfer into rehearsal, audition, and performance. The goal is a performer who doesn’t just understand the work — but owns it, under pressure, when it counts.
The Approach
Built from inside an artist’s experience.
You've probably encountered the frameworks. The breathing techniques, the visualization scripts, the mental toughness language borrowed from elite sport. Some of it lands. Most of it almost fits — until you're standing in the wings with an instrument in your hands and none of it feels built for this moment.
It wasn't. Most performance psychology was developed for athletes and adapted for artists. The research is sound. The concepts are real. But the translation is imperfect, and the person doing the translating has usually never stood where you're standing.
Steven has. He competed as a clarinetist at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. He has spent his career preparing musicians for elite youth orchestra placement. He has sat across the table as an adjudicator, evaluating exactly what separates performances that hold under pressure from ones that don't. His framework wasn't borrowed from another field. It was built from inside this one.
